Zygomatic and Pterygoid (Cheekbone) Dental Implants in Istanbul, Turkey

What Are Zygomatic (Cheekbone) Implants? | Soho Dental Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey

Zygomatic (Cheekbone)  implants are a revolutionary dental solution designed to address severe cases of tooth loss or bone loss in the upper jaw. Unlike traditional dental implants that rely on the jawbone for support, zygomatic implants are anchored into the cheekbone (zygomatic bone), a stronger and more stable structure.

This innovative approach was developed in the 1990s by a Swedish professor, Per-Ingvar Brånemark, who pioneered the concept of osseointegration – the process of fusing dental implants with the surrounding bone. Zygomatic implants take this concept a step further by utilizing the zygomatic bone (cheekbone) , which often remains strong and dense even when the upper jaw has deteriorated due to tooth loss or other factors.

How Do Zygomatic (Cheekbone) Implants Work?

The length of zygomatic implants, which can range from 30 to 55 millimeters, allows them to extend beyond the upper jaw and into the cheekbone, providing a secure and reliable foundation for dental prosthetics. This game-changing technology has opened up new possibilities for individuals who were previously deemed unsuitable for traditional implants due to inadequate bone volume or quality.

Advantages of Zygomatic and Pterygoid (Cheekbone) Implants Over Traditional Dental Implants at Soho Dental Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey

One of the primary advantages of zygomatic implants is their ability to provide a solution for patients with severe bone loss in the upper jaw. Traditional dental implants require a sufficient amount of healthy, dense bone to anchor into, but in cases of extensive bone loss, this may not be possible.

Zygomatic implants, on the other hand, bypass the need for a robust jawbone by utilizing the stronger and more stable cheekbone (zygomatic bone) as the anchor point. This eliminates the requirement for bone grafting procedures, which can be time-consuming, invasive, and costly.

Key Benefits of Zygomatic (Cheekbone) Implants:

1. No Need for Bone Grafting

Zygomatic implants offer a significant advantage for patients who have experienced extensive bone loss in the upper jaw. While traditional implants typically require bone grafting to rebuild lost bone, zygomatic implants make use of the zygomatic bone, which is often dense and stable enough to support implants. This reduces the need for expensive and invasive bone grafting procedures.

2. Faster Treatment Timeline

In Turkey, zygomatic implants provide a faster solution compared to traditional implants. Traditional implants often require several months of healing and osseointegration before the final restoration can be placed. With zygomatic implants, however, dental prosthetics can be attached much sooner — typically within a few weeks, significantly shortening the overall treatment time and allowing patients to regain their smile much quicker.

3. Higher Success Rate in Severe Bone Loss Cases

Studies have shown that zygomatic implants have a success rate of up to 97%, making them a reliable and predictable solution for patients with significant bone loss. This is a significant advantage over traditional implants, which may have a lower success rate when there's insufficient bone volume. Zygomatic implants are designed to provide a secure foundation in cases where conventional methods may fail.

4. Restores Function and Aesthetics Quickly

Another major benefit of zygomatic implants is that they allow for the restoration of both function and aesthetics in a shorter amount of time compared to traditional implants. Patients who may have had difficulty chewing, speaking, or smiling due to severe bone loss can quickly restore their natural functions and regain their confidence.

Are You a Candidate for Zygomatic (Cheekbone) Implants? | Soho Dental Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey

Zygomatic implants are primarily recommended for individuals who have experienced significant bone loss in the upper jaw, often caused by factors such as long-term tooth loss, periodontal disease, or trauma. If you’ve been told that you are not a suitable candidate for traditional dental implants, zygomatic implants may be the solution you’ve been searching for.

How to Determine if You Are a Candidate for Zygomatic Implants?

To assess whether zygomatic implants are the right option for you, your dentist or oral surgeon at Soho Dental Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey will conduct a thorough evaluation. This evaluation typically includes:

  1. Comprehensive Dental Examination
A detailed oral examination will be conducted to assess the overall health of your teeth and gums.

  2. X-Rays and CT Scans
Advanced imaging tools, such as X-rays and CT scans, will be used to evaluate the condition of your jawbone and cheekbone. These diagnostic tools are essential in determining the amount of available bone and any potential anatomical issues that could affect the placement of zygomatic implants.

  3. Assessment of Bone Density and Quality
Zygomatic implants are ideal for patients with severe bone loss in the upper jaw. Through imaging, the dentist will assess the density and volume of your bone to ensure there is enough strong bone in the zygomatic region to support the implants.

Health Considerations for Zygomatic Implants

In addition to evaluating the physical characteristics of your jaw and cheekbone, your dentist will consider your overall health and medical history. Certain conditions may affect the success of the procedure:

  • Uncontrolled diabetes

  • Weakened immune system

  • Smoking

  • Blood disorders or medications that may affect healing

It’s essential to ensure that any medical conditions are well-managed before proceeding with zygomatic implants to achieve the best possible outcome.

The Zygomatic Implant Procedure Explained at Soho Dental Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey

The zygomatic implant procedure is an advanced dental treatment designed for patients with severe bone loss in the upper jaw. This procedure is typically performed by a highly experienced oral surgeon or periodontist with specialized training in zygomatic implantology at Soho Dental Clinic, Istanbul, Turkey. The process involves the following steps:

1. Anesthesia

To ensure your comfort throughout the procedure, the surgical area will be numbed using local anesthesia. In some cases, sedation may be offered for a more relaxed experience.

2. Incision and Exposure

The surgeon will make a small incision in the gum tissue to carefully expose the cheekbone (zygomatic bone) and the upper jaw. This step allows the surgeon to access the zygomatic bone for implant placement.

3. Implant Placement

Using specialized surgical guides and techniques, the surgeon will prepare the cheekbone to receive the zygomatic implant. The implant is then carefully placed into the zygomatic bone, offering a strong and stable foundation for future dental prosthetics.

4. Temporary Restoration

In some cases, a temporary dental prosthetic (such as a temporary crown or bridge) may be placed on the zygomatic implant immediately after placement. This allows the patient to have a functional and aesthetically pleasing smile while the healing process progresses.

5. Healing and Osseointegration

Over the next several weeks to months, the zygomatic implant will integrate with the surrounding bone through a process known as osseointegration. This process creates a strong, stable foundation for the final restoration.

6. Final Restoration

Once the zygomatic implant has fully integrated with the cheekbone, the final dental prosthetic — such as a crown, bridge, or denture — will be attached, completing the restoration and transforming your smile.

The zygomatic implant procedure is generally performed under local anesthesia and may take several hours to complete, depending on the complexity of your case. Soho Dental Clinic in Istanbul ensures a comfortable and effective procedure with a highly skilled team to achieve the best results for our patients.

Preparing for Zygomatic (Cheekbone) Implant Surgery at Soho Dental Clinic, Istanbul

Preparing for your zygomatic implant surgery is crucial to ensure a smooth and successful procedure. Here are some general guidelines to follow before your surgery at Soho Dental Clinic:

1. Comprehensive Dental Evaluation

Before scheduling your zygomatic implant surgery in Istanbul, your dentist will conduct a thorough examination, including X-rays and advanced imaging techniques like CT scans. This evaluation will assess the condition of your jawbone and cheekbone, ensuring there’s enough bone volume to support the implant.

2. Medical History Review

Your dentist will review your medical history, including existing health conditions, medications, and past surgeries. This information is essential to determine if you are a suitable candidate for zygomatic implants and to identify any potential risks or complications.

3. Quit Smoking

If you smoke, it is important to quit smoking well in advance of your zygomatic implant surgery. Smoking can impair the healing process and increase the risk of complications, such as infection and implant failure.

4. Maintain Good Oral Hygiene

Maintaining good oral hygiene before the procedure is critical for reducing the risk of infection. This includes regular brushing, flossing, and using an antimicrobial mouthwash.

5. Arrange for Transportation

Since you will likely be under the influence of anesthesia or sedation on the day of your surgery, it’s essential to arrange for a trusted friend or family member to drive you to and from the clinic.

6. Prepare for the Recovery Period

Your dentist will provide you with detailed instructions on what to expect during the recovery process, including dietary restrictions, pain management, and follow-up appointments. Make sure to familiarize yourself with these guidelines. You may also want to prepare by stocking up on soft, easy-to-eat foods.

By following these preparation steps, you can ensure a smoother and more successful zygomatic implant procedure, setting the stage for a beautiful and confident new smile at Soho Dental Clinic in Istanbul.

Frequently Asked Questions About This Treatment
Have questions about this treatment? You’re not alone. From treatment timelines to costs and recovery, we’re here to guide you with clear answers, expert advice, and personalized support at every step.
Will my treatment plan or the price you gave me change when I arrive?

Good question. Unfortunately, many patients who travel for their treatment face unethical practices in clinics they prefer such as getting bullied about surprise charges by clinics.

The plan and price we share with you are carefully prepared based on the photos, X-rays, or details and your expectations that you send us before your trip. When you arrive, we simply confirm everything in person with an examination before beginning your treatment.

Sometimes, however, a small detail that could not be seen in the photos or x-rays may show up during the clinic examination. For example, this might be the need to reinforce your bone tissue with grafting and sinus lifting procedure. Unlike most clinics that deal with international patients, the pricing and the possibility of these details are transparently shared with you in your treatment plan.

If that happens, we will explain it clearly, show you the issue, and discuss all the options with you before making any changes. Nothing is ever done without your agreement.

Your treatment plan and price will stay the same unless we discover something new during your check-up. Even then, we’ll decide together with you about your options before moving forward with any treatments.

Will you help me with accommodation?

Yes, of course. Our patients regularly travel from abroad, so we make sure you feel supported not only with your dental treatment but also with your stay in Istanbul. We can recommend trusted hotels close to our clinic, and if you prefer, we can also help arrange your booking.

Our goal is to make your trip as smooth and stress-free as possible, so you can focus on your treatment and enjoy your time in the city. We’ll gladly assist you with accommodation and make sure you have comfortable options during your visit.

Is it safe to travel to Turkey?

Yes! Turkey is a very popular destination for international visitors and millions of tourists travel here safely every year. Cities like Istanbul are not only cultural and historical centers but also well-prepared to welcome patients from abroad with modern clinics, hotels, and transport services and many world-renowned touristic attractions.

Like in any big city, it’s always wise to take normal travel precautions — such as keeping your valuables safe and being aware of your surroundings. Our clinic also helps arrange trusted transportation and accommodation options to make sure you feel comfortable and secure during your stay. With the extra support we provide, your dental trip can also be a smooth and worry-free experience.

What materials are used for dental crowns at your clinic?

We utilize the latest technologies and treatment protocols available in dentistry.

Regarding dental prostheses, Ivoclar (Swiss) brand is used veneers meanwhile Amman-Girrbach brand is preferred for all on 4/6 treatments over implants.

Can I see the shape and color of my teeth before they are made?

Yes, absolutely. During smile design, we show you a simulation of your new teeth before they are actually made. With a “mock-up” model, you can see both the color and the shape of your future teeth, and even how they will look inside your mouth. Once you approve the mock-up, the final teeth are produced according to your choice.

One important note: after your restorations are made, they cannot be lightened further, but they can be adjusted to a slightly darker shade if needed. That’s why we discuss all details with you beforehand and take your feedback seriously, so the final result matches exactly what you want.

In short: yes, you’ll see a preview of your new smile before treatment — and you’ll have a chance to approve the look before the final teeth are made.

Will I experience too much pain after implant surgery?

You might feel some discomfort, swelling, or mild soreness in the first few days, which is similar to what you would feel after having a tooth pulled. However, this is usually well controlled with over-the-counter painkillers and the medication we will prescribe to you.

On your first day of the operation, You will also be asked to follow a 5-minutes-on, 5-minutes-off application of an ice pack we will be providing you. This is to aid you in preventing the swelling which is also reinforced further by the pain medication we’ll be prescribing you, which will act as your anti-inflammatory. The pain is typically the strongest in the first 48 hours and then quickly improves.

Moreover, during the procedure itself, you won’t feel any pain because we use local anesthesia and also offer sedation options to keep you relaxed and comfortable or put you to sleep throughout the procedure in case you prefer that.

Can I safely postpone my dental treatments?

Postponing dental treatment is possible, but it is not the safest choice. Dental health issues tend to present themselves without major symptoms and are progressive. Small problems like cavities or gum issues often start out painless. But over time, they can grow and lead to bigger issues such as infections, tooth loss, then bone loss, or the need for more complex treatments.

If your situation isn’t urgent, a short delay may not cause harm. However, the longer you wait, the higher the risk that the problem becomes more serious and costly to fix. More delay means more chances for your oral and dental health to get worse.

It’s best not to delay dental treatment. If you have concerns about timing, consult your dentist. Together you can make a plan that fits your needs.

Which crown is better over implants, E-Max or Zirconium Crown?

For implants, zirconia is generally the stronger and safer choice. It is very durable, making it ideal for the back chewing teeth as well as for full-mouth restorations. Zirconia can handle the high pressure of biting and chewing without problems.

E-Max crowns, on the other hand, are made fully from porcelain and provide a more natural, lifelike appearance. That’s why they are usually recommended for the front teeth, especially when only 1–2 implants are placed in the smile line. They still function well on implants and won’t break easily there, but they are not advised for the back teeth where chewing force is much stronger.

Zirconia works everywhere in the mouth and is the most reliable option for implant crowns, while E-Max is sometimes chosen for the front teeth when the patient wants the most natural-looking smile

What do I do if an All-on-6 prosthesis breaks?

If you experience a fracture or crack in your All-on-6 prosthesis, it is important to visit our clinic as soon as possible.

Repair or replacement, if necessary, will be carried out by our specialist dentists. Please avoid attempting any self-repair, as this could damage both the implants and your gums.

For more information or to schedule an urgent appointment, you can contact us directly.

Are All-on-6 prostheses made of resin, acrylic, or plastic material?

All-on-6 prostheses are generally made from durable materials such as porcelain or zirconia, which provide both aesthetics and long-term strength.

Resin, acrylic, or plastic materials are usually used only for temporary prostheses.

The most suitable material for your permanent prosthesis will be determined after a detailed examination at our clinic. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact us.

Is sedation are available in your clinic for dental implant treatment? What types of sedation are available?

Absolutely. Patient comfort is top priority at our clinic. We’d like to keep your treatments as comfortable and stress-free as possible, especially people who would feel anxious about dental procedures.

We offer three types of sedation depending on your needs and medical history. These are;

  • Local anesthesia, which numbs only the area being operated on. It’s the most common and widespread method that is included in all our implant procedures.
  • IV Sedation, also called twilight sedation, which keeps you relaxed and calm during the treatment while still being awake. Many patients won’t even remember the procedure afterward.
  • General anesthesia, which is used for cases where deeper sedation is necessary. This kind of sedation is typically done with an anesthesiologist present.

Before your treatment, we will comprehensively discuss your options, answer any questions you may have and choose the safest, most comfortable solution tailored for your treatment plan. Your peace of mind matters just as much as your smile to us.

Why is an implant preferred instead of a bridge in cases of tooth loss?

Unless the space caused by tooth loss requires more than one implant, dental implants are preferred instead of bridges mainly because they offer a long-lasting solution without affecting your healthy teeth.

Bridge treatment requires shaving down the healthy teeth on either side of your gap so that they can support the replacement tooth in the middle. This means permanently altering your healthy teeth just to fix one missing tooth. An implant here is used without shaving your healthy teeth and replaces what is lost and enables your healthy teeth to stay untouched.

Implants also help preserve bone in your jaw. When a tooth is missing, the underlying bone tissue begins to shrink over time. Implants attach to and stimulate the bone tissue just like a tooth root, providing a firm grip and keeping your facial structure intact. Bridges won’t do this.

Can implant surgery or other treatments be performed for patients diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis, etc.?

The answer is Yes. As long as the patient’s overall health is stable and well-managed, patients with conditions like HIV, Hep B, Hep C can safely receive dental implant treatment and other procedures.

The points of considerance here are your immune status, viral load and whether you’re under proper medical care and monitoring. Thanks to right precautions and planning, dental treatment and surgery can be done safely and successfully.

We always coordinate with your medical team as needed to ensure the timing and conditions are right for your post-op healing process.

We follow strict universal infection control protocols for all our patients, so you will be treated with the same level of care and respect as anyone else. Your medical history will stay confidential, and your health and well-being will be our utmost priority. It is every patient’s right to ask to receive health care regardless of their condition, and we are here to support you every step of your journey.

Can patients with chronic conditions such as diabetes have implants?

Of course! Patients with chronic conditions can still receive dental implants. It depends on how well your condition is controlled. If your diabetes is well-managed (meaning that your blood sugar is at stable levels), your body will have the ability to heal properly after your implant surgery.

We will kindly ask you tos hare your blood sugar levels from your HbA1c Test. If the test values allow, you will be able to get implant surgery unless there is some other condition that would actually prevent you from getting dental implants.

That’s why we always ask about your medical history first, and may request blood test results to understand your overall health before planning the treatment of your unique case.

Can I still get implants if I’m a smoker?

Yes, you can still get implants even if you are a smoker. It doesn’t disqualify you for implantation. However, it’s important to know that smoking does bring the increased risk of complications.

Smoking affects your blood flow and your body’s healing capability. These are both essential for your implants to successfully bond with your jawbone. It may also raise the chances of infection around your surgical area which may lead to implant failure, especially during the early stages of your healing process. This is the reason why we strongly recommend quitting or at least reducing smoking before and after your implant surgery.

It’s just like growing a plant. If the pot’s soil is dry and the conditions are tough, the plant might still grow, but it will need more care and attention. It’s the same when it comes to dental implants. The more supportive your environment, the better your treatment outcome will be.

During our consultations, we always aim to talk openly about your lifestyle, evaluate the condition of your oral health and make a plan that gives your implants the best chance to succeed.

What happens if the implant fails?

Dental implants have been shown to have a very high success rate that is over 95%. It is true that in rare cases, an implant may not heal properly or may fail over time. If that happens, you have no need to worry, it’s not the end of the road for you.

If there is such an occurrence during the early healing phase, we remove it, let the area heal, and then plan a second attempt. Bone grafting may be considered further in such procedures.

The bone tissue in your middle frontal area (where your incisor teeth are located) has softer bone tissue and is not preferred for dental implants. This is why an expert maxillofacial surgeon assesses and measures the best angle and location in your mouth for your unique case when performing treatments protocols such as all on 4 or all on 6.

In most cases, the solution is straightforward and successful, especially when you’re treated at a clinic experienced in handling such cases. There are quite a lot of parameters that are handled by an expert maxillofacial surgeon that you don’t have to deal with. This is the main reason why we recommend not going forward with cheap clinics and choosing dentists with questionable credentials. Dental implant surgery is still a surgery and requires adequate preparation with proper knowledge and experience.

At our clinic, we also provide follow-up care and clear guidance to help minimize risks and keep your implants healthy for years to come. Plus, your treatment will be subject to complication insurance if performed at our clinic. In addition, we stand by our work — so if something does go wrong, you will not be left on your own.

What is the difference between All-on-4 and All-on-6 treatments? How do you decide which one is right for me?

The main difference between these two treatments is the amount of implants used in the treatment. 4 implants per jaw and 6 implants per jaw.

Both methods provide patients with a full set of fixed teeth. All on 6 offers extra support and stability. This can be helpful if you have stronger bone density or want an even more secure foundation for long-term durability.

Let’s take a look at this with an example. You are building a bridge, and you can build a safe, strong bridge with four support beams. However, if the ground allows, you may go with increasing the strength and balance even more by adding two extra supports and make it even more resilient.

The decision depends on bone structure, your general oral health condition and your bite force. Following the assessment of your case, your surgeon will recommend the option that best suits your case. Yes, each case is unique in dentistry and requires expert planning and consideration.

Both treatment protocols offer great lifetime results. The key is finding the right expert for the job that will painstakingly assess and evaluate your case with due diligence. That’s exactly what we do for all our patients here at Soho Clinic.

If I don’t have enough bone tissue for dental implants, can I still get implants?

In most cases, yes! You will still be able to get implants even if you have lost bone before. This is a common condition that is regularly encountered in patients, especially cases where tooth loss has been present for a long time. But there are advanced treatment solutions that work around it.

Usually, for treatment protocols such as All-on-4 or All-on-6, We often place implants in areas where the bone is naturally stronger for retention, so grafting may not be needed.

However, if your sinuses have extended down to your jawbone due to bone loss, a procedure called bone grafting is preferred. In this procedure, there is an surgical intervention called sinus lifting which involves making space within your sinus cavity in order to insert medical grade bone tissue to build up bone in the area for implantation.

You can think of this as renovating a house. If the foundation is not strong enough in one spot, an expert finds another way to safely support the structure. It’s just the same with implant treatment. We tailor your treatment plan to suit your needs and your current health condition.

During your consultation, we’ll take 3D scans to assess current condition and offer the best and most comfortable solution for your needs. We will always explain the what, the how and the when to you to serve you in the best way that we can.

Do implant brands actually matter? (Why is there a price difference?)

Of course they do. Well-established and long-running implant brands boast of decades of research and development behind their name as well as strict manufacturing standards and have global support networks. This means you will have a much easier time finding compatible components if you ever need maintenance for your implants even back in your home country.

Lesser-known or very low-cost brands may not offer that same reliability. Imagine when buying a car; a trusted, international brand gives you the confidence that you will find spare parts, service centers whereever you go.

However, the main point to absolutely consider here is the expertise of your preferred maxillofacial surgeon. As a patient, it is crucial to choose your doctor wisely because no matter the brand, even the best implant brands may fail after surgery if they are performed by dentists without proper experience and surgical expertise.

A successful implantation involves key points such as knowing where on your jawbone is the most suitable location to put your implants, whether you need to get your sinus lifted in order to reinforce it with bone powder called grafts etc.

Imagine going with the lowest cost possible to cut back on surgical expertise and established implant brands. Noone likes to gamble with their health. At least that’s what our work ethics and common sense tell us.

For full mouth implant treatments such as All on 4 / All on 6, why do some clinics tell me that they can complete the treatment in 10 days while you say that you can do it in 3 days?

Great question. The difference in the treatment duration comes down to the technique used in the treatment.

At Soho, we follow a modern, minimally invasive method which prevents excessive surgical trauma to your bone and gums. We perform your surgery on your first day and attach your healing caps. You may have heard of these healing caps as “gingivaformers” or “healing abutments”. These allow for the implant’s surrounding hard and soft tissue to heal properly to be finished with a tooth restoration.

After your healing caps are attached, we take your impression to manufacture your fixed temporary teeth, which will be attached to screws on your implants. On your third day, we attach your fixed temporary teeth and you can fly back home.

Why do I have to visit your clinic a second time for my implant treatment?

Dental implant treatment protocol is the same worldwide. It is handled in two visits. This is mainly due to the surgical healing time your body needs and for your bone to integrate with the implant completely, a process called osteointegration.

In your first visit, we will be placing your dental implants into your jawbone using surgical instruments. Following that, your body will need time usually around 3 to 6 months for the implant to fuse together with your bone tissue. This healing step is crucial to your treatment’s long-term success.

Imagine this operation like planting a tree. You first plant the seed and give time for your seed to take root. It’s only after your tree becomes strong and stable that it will be able to grow fully and support its branches. Your tooth restoration will be added on top of your implant after this process is completed.

What is an abutment? Why do I need one if I already have implants and I'm getting a crown?

Abutment is a connector part of an implant that is used for making a connection between the implant and the crown, which is placed on top of your implant screw for your visible tooth restoration.

You may already have implants surgically put in your mouth. However, abuments are still needed in order for us to be able to attach your crown securely in place. Abutment enables the crown to fit properly, stay stable and have a natural tooth position.

If your existing implants were placed some time ago by a different provider, we may still need to use new custom abutments which match the crown design manufactured by our lab-work and compatible with your bite type.
