Dental Implant
What is Dental Implant?
Dental implants are titanium screws that imitate the root of the tooth, placed in the jawbone to replace the missing teeth in the oral region. It allows a fixed prosthesis to be made in the relevant area without the need for treatment in the surrounding dental tissues. It functions as an artificial tooth root to support the crown or bridge prosthesis planned to be made in that area. Implants can be placed to support removable dentures as well as fixed dentures. With the support it creates, it minimizes the disadvantages of removable dentures.
What are the advantages of dental implant application?
The dental implant allows the patient to have a fixed prosthesis even in the absence of the necessary support teeth in the mouth. It is also an ideal treatment alternative for patients with sufficient supportive teeth to make prostheses without eroding the teeth. In case of good care, it minimizes the bone resorption that will occur over time in the area where it is placed, and protects the bone tissue in the relevant area. It can serve as a support for removable prostheses with poor adhesion due to bone deficiency and significantly increases the wearing comfort of the prosthesis. Since it imitates the relation of real teeth with other tissues as close to ideal, it creates a very natural appearance if other tissues in the region are sufficient.
Is there any age restriction for dental implant application?
It is important that the patient completed the bone development in order to perform this application.; While the development of jaw bones is completed at the age of 15-16 for women, it usually continues until the age of 17-18 for men. Depending on the development level of the bone and the patient’s need for treatment, the lower limit determined for the age of treatment may vary. There is no upper limit for the age of application of the treatment. However, in the area with missing teeth, an increase in bone resorption and tilting of the surrounding teeth may occur over time. When these situations occur, additional treatments may be required for implant application. In order to minimize this possibility, it is beneficial to plan the implant treatment as soon as possible
What awaits you in the dental implant treatment process?
In the first examination, detailed clinical and radiographic examinations are made and the conditions necessary for treatment are evaluated. If suitable conditions are provided, the necessary aesthetic evaluations are made and dental prostheses are designed in a way that best suits the expectations of the patient. The implant features required for the dental prosthesis to be placed in accordance with the design plan are determined. Three-dimensional radiographic image taken from the patient is used to determine these features. Millimetric measurements are made on these radiographic images; The size, diameter and location of the implant are decided.
The duration of treatment in dental implant applications may vary depending on the patient’s condition and needs. In some cases, the transition to the prosthesis stage can be made on the same day with the dental implant application, but if the necessary conditions are not met the process may be prolonged due to additional surgical procedures. During the treatment session, the procedure is performed comfortably under local anesthesia. In this process, slots are opened on the jawbone that are compatible with the position and size of the implants. After the slots are opened, implants are placed in the necessary areas and the procedure is completed with suturing. This process takes an average of 10 minutes for each implant. Approximately one week after the procedure, a control examination is performed and at the same time, sutures are removed during this examination.
After the implants are placed, the application of permanent prostheses on the implant is done after the implants are integrated with the bone. Making permanent prostheses without waiting for the integration process can reduce the durability of the implant and shorten its life. This process is completed in about three months for the upper jaw and two months for the lower jaw. Depending on the insufficient amount of bone, it may take up to six months if it is neccessary to performe additional procedures before the implant application.
What awaits you after dental implant treatment?
Contrary to popular belief, dental implant treatments are quite simple and safe. Thanks to being a comfortable procedure, you can easily return to your daily routine right after the treatment. After treatment, pain is usually not observed. However, minimal pain and edema may rarely occur due to surgical intervention. The possibility of these problems can easily be minimized by using the medications prescribed by the physician regularly, applying cold compresses to the area and with good oral care. Paying attention to oral hygiene is also very effective in the long-term success of implant treatment. Cleaning of the implant area can be easily achieved with routine tooth brushing and the use of dental floss or interface brushes. Another important point is to go to a dentist check-up every six months during the first two years following the treatment and once a year after this period. In this way if there is a factor that may cause conditions that may damage the implant, it can be diagnosed early and removed without causing significant damage to the implant.
Are dental implants safe to apply?
Dental implants are very safe when sufficient amount of bone is provided, when it is placed in a position that will not damage the surrounding tissues and if the patient does not have a habit or disease that will interfere with the treatment. These implants are produced by applying the titanium element some special processes in order to provide the appropriate form. Since titanium is a material compatible with the human body, it does not cause an allergic or toxic reaction. In this way, it can be used safely in the mouth. When routine oral care is done well, it can be used safely for many years in the mouth.
What is the number of dental implants you need?
In a patient who lost all his teeth; If the use of removable prostheses is preferred, although it depends on the treatment needs of the patient, it is usually sufficient to make 2 to 4 implants in a single jaw to support this prosthesis. In cases where fixed prosthesis is preferred, the treatment can be performed by the application of 4 to 8 implants by using special techniques. Detailed information about these techniques can be found in our All on 4 and All on 6 Implant Applications article. In cases where tooth deficiency is regional, the number of implants required to be applied may vary depending on the structure of the jawbone, the positions of healthy teeth, the location and length of the relevant region.
What is the cost of dental implant applications?
Cost of implant applications varies according to the planned treatment and the implant brand decided to be used. In the treatment plan; The necessity of additional surgical procedures to the treatment, the number of implants to be applied, the preferred application technique and the features of the prosthesis planned to be prepared on the implant are the factors that determine the cost.
